Background: As part of programmes under the STABEX 1994 transfer, the EC delegation in Zimbabwe with the Governemnt of Zimbabwe commissioned the development of smallholder coffee irrigation schems in Honde Valley.The importance of the Coffee sector systems from its historical contribution to foreign exchange earnings. The study was commissioned to take stock of important developments that have taken place especially in view of many changes like liberalisation in 1994,Cyclone eline of 2000 and the land reform of 2000.
Objectives: The objectives for this work included:

  • Designing of the irrigation schemes
  • Baseline study
  • Training of irrigators
  • Development of Tender Dossier for irrigation works
  • Supervision of irrigation development work
Activities: Designing of the irrigation schemes: the work involved carrying out topographical surveys, soil and water studies, agronomic survey and environmental impact assessment. The outputs inlcuded: topographical maps, detailed irrigation engineering designs and plot maps for the individual irrigated plots.

Baseline study:  carried out a baseline study for benchmarking indicators of measuring impact of the irrigation schemes.  The baseline study inlcuded an agro-econmic survey and anthropological survey.

Training of irrigators: A training needs analysis of the beneficiaries was done including organising and managing a study visit to other succesfull small scale irrigation schemes by the beneficiary farmers.

Development of Tender Dossier for irrigation works: The team developed a tender dossier for the setting up of the irrigation schemes according to EDF rules and guidelines.
